A Whole Other Reason to Blog

I'm the blogger. They turned to me first. I responded as well as I could with short notice.

http://krystofskommunity.wordpress.com/

Krystof is the son of my two good friends Dave and Marta. They live in Trumansburg, just across Ithaca from me. Krystof was diagnosed 8 days ago with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and is currently undergoing chemotherapy at Strong Medical in Rochester. He'll be up there for a month. Then he'll be back here and will be recieving chemo treatments for the next two years. He's 4 years old.

We might use the blog to raise money soon, we'll post some pictures, maybe a video from Krystof for his extended family around the world. This gives us a whole other reason to blog.

Visiting Avery Logistics 4.0

Avery is now in Cambridge! Avery is staying with our wonderful friend Andrea in North Cambridge this week. I'll be joining her in a couple of days. She can be reached via email - and soon via her new verizon phone with her new "607" area code phone number.

(I'm in Ithaca for now).

Visiting Avery Logistics 2.0

Leeloo
Hello!

It's Saturday morning and Avery and I are now in Berlin. We'll be here probably just until tomorrow. We're visiting with the cats and doing some laundry. If you want to visit us today or tonight give us a call at 617-817-6397 or 978-838-2607 and I'll give you directions.

Tomorrow I'll probably drop Avery off in Boston at her dad's apartment, then I'll turn around and head west to Ithaca. Monday morning we're having a dig at the house we're looking to buy that should help us figure out what is wrong with the septic system (and how much it will cost to fix). I'm hopefull that the issue will be minor and that we may be able to close by the end of the week (whoah! a house by the end of the week!) or early next week.

As for today, my sister is scheduled to drop by this morning with her husband and we're just going to watch the rain and hope that some more fantastic Sox-Yankees games happen.

Visiting Avery Logistics 1.0

People have been wondering how to get here to 85 E. India Row, and about parking...Here are some details for you:

Taking the T
Take the Blue Line to the Aquarium Stop. Follow the signs to the aquarium. When you get to the road directly in front of the aquarium (Old Atlantic Ave.) and look up you'll see two 40 story towers. See "Finding Tower 1" below.

Driving and Parking for less than an hour
Here's the map of the area. Turn onto E. India Row. At the end of the very short street take a right and talk to the guard on duty. Just tell him or her that you are visiting 10G, Tower 1. They will probably give you a piece of paper to put in your windshield (or maybe not) and then you can park anywhere in the circle for up to 30 minutes (you can probably get away with staying for up to an hour before they complain). Follow "Finding Tower 1" below.

Driving and Parking for more than an hour
Here's the map again. You can park anywhere in the financial district (Franklin Street, India Street, Well Street, Broad Street, Custom House Street, Milk Street) between 8pm and 8am without paying meters. Just read the signs for details. During the day for a quarter per 15 minutes you can stay for up to 2 hours. Follow the "Finding Tower 1" below, bring you map to get to East India Row

Driving and Parking and not worrying about money
There is a parking garage right in front of Avery's dad's apartment building. You can enter the garage on Central Street. Follow the "Finding Tower 1" below.

Finding Tower 1
Avery's dad lives in Tower 1 (closer to the water), go in and ask for apartment 10G. Someone will call us and let you in. Take the elevator to the 10th floor and search for 10G!

Things happening on September 13th

Pedicureday Avery's third full day of at home recovery started with sleeping in. I woke up around 9:00, made some coffee and sat out on the porch for a little while. I came in to mix some yogurt, granola and fresh raspberries for breakfast and I found Avery to be awake. A little later, Sarah got up. By about 10:30 we'd all had something to eat and we figured today would be a good day for Avery to get a little pedicure action.

The Casa Blanca Salon is right down the street from Avery's dad's apartment building. We left around 11:45 to see if they were open. They were closed. They were also closed on Sunday. We moved on. Our next stop was on State Street, but they wanted to charge $40 per person. We moved on. We hiked up State Street to Washington and headed into downtown crossing. Just after the Old South Meeting House we found a salon. Sarah ran up the two flights to check out the prices. She returned with the news of pedicure - $23, pedicure and manicure combo - $33. We headed upstairs.

Pedicare_dave Avery and Sarah started their pedicures and I sat and watched and worked on the Globe Sunday Crossword puzzle. I have never had a pedicure and I can't say it has always been a dream of mine, but I did take a good look at my feet today and realized they were in need of some work. The whole summer of wearing sandals and going barefoot around the house had dried out my feet and they looked downright scary. I realized though this summer, since I was extra sensitive about showing my feet in sandals, that no matter where I went I would always see people with feet that were dirtier, nails that were yellower, and toenails that were longer than my own. It gave me a little bit of comfort knowing that no matter how bad my feet look, there's always someone who's feet look worse.

The procedure (what else would it be called?) started with a long soaking of my feet. In the picture I have my feet and ankles soaking in a hot bath of water with bubble jets massasing in between and around my toes.

The woman who sat at my feet first trimmed and filed the nails. Then she oiled the cuticles and pushed them down. I'm not sure how much of this is health related and how much is cosmetic. All I know is that she was using tools that I hadn't seen since the last time I went to my dentists office. That metal thing they use for plaque, the pedicurists have the same thing to get gunk out from under your toe nails. She moved on to using a hard stone brush to wipe away all the fragments of my foot (yucky skin) and then moisturized from my toes to my knees. My feet felt good immediately following the work. They felt softer and looked much cleaner.

Ped_day1 Ped_day2 While I was having work done on my feet, Avery and Sarah had moved on to the manicure stations. Upon completion and payment for our little bit of post-op spoil Avery adventure, we headed to Chacarero for Chilean lunch. Post lunch, Avery, Sarah and I walked through the financial district to Avery's dad's apartment. It was a busy couple of hours, but worth the walk.

The first 2 days at home

Avery has now been at her dad's for 2 full days, plus about 9 hours. She's been having some head and neck pain (which is soothed by both massage and ice packs). One of Avery's high school friends, Sarah S., is here visiting from Philadelphia. Sarah got here yesterday morning and leaves tomorrow afternoon. Avery has really appreciated having Sarah around to keep her company.

9_desserts Last night we had a little soiree with Brian (another of the high school group) and his wife Lisa, as well as Andrea and her friend Jennifer. Rounding out the group (to make it an even eight people) was Avery's dad. Andrea brought over a 9 piece sampler from Finale Boston. We talked for a couple of hours and tried a few different of the tasty treats each.

Around 10:45, everyone had headed for home, and I headed back to Berlin to take care of the kitties.

Today I lounged around quite a bit, took care of some business around the house, visited the farm and then arrived back at Avery's dad's at about 7:30. Avery had some more guests today, including Krishna and Martina.

Tomorrow I'll try to do some updates on both the hospital recovery period (per Avery's request) and the house in New York. Someday we'll actually close on that thing.

Avery has been discharged!

Avery has been discharged from MGH today! Her parents have picked up her prescriptions and I'm at her dad's apartment waiting for them to get here. We'll be here at the apartment in Boston (near the aquarium) for at least the next few days. I'll post directions and other information about coming over to visit Avery later today.

A few people have asked me about where to send flowers...Here's her dad's address:
85 E India Row
Apt. 10G
Boston, MA 02110-3351

You can put Avery's name on mail/letters/packages/flowers, they deliver mail here for her.

New View from Ellison 1238

mgh_view2

Here's the view from Avery's new room. There's a nice view of the river (with floating buses - duckboats), the Longfellow bridge and in the distance the Citgo sign and the Mass Ave. bridge. (Click the image for a larger view)

Yo! We've switched rooms!

the_real_etate_leaders Avery has moved to another room! Tuesday night, Avery's roommate stayed up most of the night screaming and yelling. On Wednesday afternoon when I got to the hospital, Avery hadn't slept very much since the surgery (24 hours before). We requested some type of room resolution. The wonderful nurses of White 12 searched around and found Avery a room with a window, not too far away. Around 5pm we moved to the new location.

This actually happened yesterday, but this afternoon was my first chance to let you know. Her new room information is:
Ellison 1238, take the "E" elevator to the 12th floor, head into Ellison and follow the hallway to the nurses station, then take a 135 degree right turn, go all the way to the end of the hallway and you'll find 1238 on your left.

Her new number is 617-724-5295

Visiting hours are still 1pm to 8pm, but they are super nice at MGH and can be a little flexible. Call me if you have any questions.
